Signs that You Need to Let Go of Your Staff

Managing people whether in a small business or a large organization takes skills. It requires leadership and effective communication skills as well lots of patience and tolerance.

Any manager would know how challenging it is to handle people and carry out disciplinary actions to those who are showing inappropriate behavior while in the workplace. One of the most difficult situations as well is letting go of employees whether due to downsizing, performance or behavior issues.

In any organization, there are tell-tale signs that show a worker may need to be disciplined or in worse cases, terminated. But these people need to be told the proper way with dignity and respect. Doing it in a staff meeting or through email or memo is not the right way to do it. Instead, managers should sit down and talk personally to each employee to explain the reason.3

Signs to Watch Out For

Poor performance: A worker’s productivity can decline for varied reasons. It can be due to work overload or being placed in a project where they can’t apply the required skills. Other times, however, an employee’s performance just drops for no valid reason and you need to give him or her extra attention to improve his performance. When this happens, the individual would tend to spend more time doing other things other than his work and when confronted, he or she would even deny such acts. If you observe this, it’s about time to call the staff for a one-on-one meeting.

Bad Behavior: A bad working attitude should never be tolerated particularly if it goes on after confronting the concerned employee. A careless behavior, for example, does not have any place in your organization. If this is the case in your workplace, it’s a sign that the behavior won’t have a chance of getting any better in the future. Additionally, you need to dig deeper as there could be something that’s causing this bad behavior which could lead to depression if the worker is terminated. Low morale: A worker who used to be enthusiastic about his work and engaged and then becomes unmotivated could more likely become a problem employee. He or she would complain about his co-workers and workload and could no longer gain the motivation they once had while still starting out in the office. When negativity spreads and team members fail to accomplish their tasks on time, chances are this could affect the other workers.

Absenteeism: An employee with a low morale could also find reasons not to report to work when he or she feels like it. Managers should watch out for this and have a personal chat with the worker to know the root of the problem. It could be that the staff is no longer comfortable with his co-workers and no longer motivated to perform his work well.

Unreasonable demands: When you employee asks for unrealistic things, take it as a sign that he or she is no longer satisfied with his job or his work environment. If there’s more than one of them doing this, it could be a sign that someone’s behind the coup hence as a manager, you need to view the situation as objective as possible and find out the root cause. Again, it’s a good idea to talk to each of them personally.

These are only some of the signs that show problems exist in your staff. Discussing the issues with each worker can help you decide fairly on how to remedy the situation or simply let go of the employee.
